
Cornelius Young
Music Director
Cornelius Young is the new Music Director for Vienna Community Band.
He has taught music at various levels in Mississippi, Michigan, and Maryland.
Cornelius began his formal education at Southwest Mississippi Community College, he later transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, he later did graduate study at Eastern Michigan University. Cornelius has studied conducting with Steven Moser (Southern Miss), Mary Schneider (Eastern Michigan), and briefly with Sarah McKoin during her time as a guest of EMU. tuba with Richard Perry (Southern Miss) and Dennis Nulty (DSO), piano with Connie Lambuth (SMCC) and briefly with Elizabeth Moak (USM), and voice with Joe Elliot (SMCC).
He has performed with the choirs and bands at SMCC, the Concert Band, Steel Pan Ensemble, Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, various jazz combos and Jazz Lab II at the University of Southern Mississippi, the Symphonic Band and various jazz combos at Eastern Michigan University, as well as with the Hattiesburg (MS) City Band, the Pearl River County (MS) Community Band, the Main Street Baptist Orchestra, the Gulf Coast Wind Symphony (MS), and The Starkville-MSU Community Band. He also had the opportunity to sing as a bass soloist in a joint concert of the Southwest Mississippi Community Chorus and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra on Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. He has also performed with D.C. Swing and Southern Maryland Jazz Orchestra as the pianist.
Cornelius has been fortunate to have conducted the Eastern Michigan University Concert Band in its inaugural year and 2nd year, The University of Southern Mississippi Symphonic Winds (in an undergraduate conducting concert), and has guest conducted at various high schools and middle schools. In 2004, he was invited to accompany Dr. Thomas Fraschillo (Southern Miss) to Rome, Italy as he hosted the winners of the 2004 National Band Association International Conducting Symposium. There he had the opportunity to conduct the Band d’ell Esercito (The Italian Army Band of Rome).
Cornelius is an avid supporter of the musical arts and is currently the pianist for ‘Shaken, Not Stirred’, a jazz trio that performs in Southern Maryland.
Cornelius is currently the Director of Bands at Bel Air (MD) High School in Harford County, MD. Cornelius is married to Reena Young, a music educator in Prince George’s County, MD, where she teaches band and orchestra.
When Cornelius is not practicing piano, playing gigs, or studying scores, He enjoys time with his wife catching up on the latest shows on Netflix such as Game of Thrones or watching his favorite trio of shows online by creator Shonda Rhimes
