Position Open: Band Director

Job description: Select music for a community band and conduct the rehearsals and concerts.

Candidate should:

  • Use various instructional techniques to develop high quality music performance and select a musical repertoire appropriate for skill levels of band members.
  • Give due emphasis to improvement of the musical quality of Vienna Community Band concerts, to include selecting music pieces for concerts that generate audience appeal and appreciation for the Vienna Community Band.
  • Possess good organizational ability and skill in interpersonal relations with band members.
  • Submit budget needs to board/treasurer in accordance with established timelines and guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with board members and town officials involved in planning the music program.

Minimum Requirements: Candidate should have a degree in music or music education. Prior conducting experience working with adults is desired.

Start Date: September 2010

Compensation: A semiannual stipend based on the candidate’s experience is available.

Rehearsal Schedule: Sundays from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Vienna Community Center (Sep-Jul)

Background: The Vienna Community Band is a non-profit organization that has been serving the Vienna community for the last 36 years by participation in Town events as well as separate concerts. Currently, this is an organization of approximately 60 musicians with 9 concerts scheduled per year. The Vienna Community Band has an Associate Band Director who is available to cover rehearsals and concerts as coordinated by the Band Director.

Selection process: Approximately 3 candidates will be selected to rehearse and perform 3 music pieces each with the Vienna Community Band during the April-July 2010 time period.
